Algiers

A celebrated jewel thief feels safe inside the twisting Casbah of Algiers, where police cannot easily reach him. The arrival of a glamorous visitor awakens his longing for Paris—and tempts him beyond the refuge that has become his prison.

The film was Hedy Lamarr’s Hollywood debut and helped turn her into an American star.

Its romantic Casbah imagery influenced Casablanca and the character Pepé Le Pew, although the famous invitation to “come with me to the Casbah” is never spoken in the movie.
