A Farewell To Arms

During World War I, an American ambulance driver serving in Italy falls in love with a British nurse. Their romance struggles against military duty, separation, and the mounting human cost of the war.

The screenplay adapts Ernest Hemingway’s semi-autobiographical 1929 novel, though the film reshapes parts of the book for a pre-Code Hollywood romance.

It won Academy Awards for cinematography and sound and was also nominated for best picture and art direction.
